How BERWOW Retrofit Tool Works

BERWOW is a cloud-based technology platform developed to provide retrofit dashboards and calculators to homeowners. It uses BER certificate data to produce a list of energy upgrade options for houses and apartments. If the homeowner has a BER cert and enters their certificate number or MPRN, BERWOW will retrieve their BER data file from the national BER database. It then checks all current conditions (e.g. levels of roof insulation, wall insulation) and then recommends best practice upgrade measures.

The user can select and deselect measures or choose from the options provided to plan their retrofit project. BERWOW provides typical industry average cost of works. If homeowners do not have a BER certificate, they can select from over 50 building typologies where they should generally find a dwelling type similar to theirs.

The homeowner, now well-informed, can book a home survey to start on the road to retrofitting their home. BERWOW also calculates the grants available, energy partner incentives, a financial dashboard, a CO2 storyboard and mapped locational BER indicators.

What our clients say

Understanding the BER Improvements

Improving your Building Energy Rating (BER) starts with the right upgrades.

From insulation and windows to heating, ventilation, and solar, each measure can boost comfort, lower energy bills, and reduce your home’s carbon footprint.

Explore the main improvement options below and learn how each one works, its benefits, and the best practices for installation.

Keep heat inside and draughts out by insulating suspended timber floors, exposed floors, and floors over unheated spaces. Options include mineral fibre, spray foam, or rigid insulation boards.

Improve wall energy efficiency with external, internal, cavity, or timber-frame wall insulation. The right choice depends on your wall type, age of the home, and space constraints.

From attic roll to high-performance rafter boards, roof insulation stops major heat loss. Options include ceiling level, sloped roof, flat roof, or full “room-in-roof” insulation.

Upgrade to modern energy-efficient doors and windows to eliminate draughts, reduce noise, and improve thermal performance.

Boost heating efficiency with heat pumps, modern condensing boilers, or smart heating controls. Reduce running costs while improving comfort.

Improve indoor air quality while retaining heat using demand control ventilation, heat recovery systems, air-tightness upgrades, or chimney sealing.

Generate clean energy and reduce bills with solar PV for electricity or solar thermal for hot water. Works well alongside heat pumps and battery storage.
