What Matters Most to Voters in Ireland: Elections 2024

With Ireland’s election day upon us, our data analytics team at Gamma Labs has prepared a set of constituency-level statistics and metrics that shine a light on the key demographic, housing, and education trends shaping voter concerns in Ireland.

These insights are designed to inform both the electorate and candidates as they consider the issues that matter most. Covering Ireland’s 43 constituencies, the data highlights the diverse challenges and opportunities faced by communities across the country.

Below, we break down the key themes and findings from our analysis:

  • Polls indicate that important issues to voters include economy, housing, childcare and climate change.
  • Average annual household income – the median Irish household income 2022 is estimated to be between €45,000 and €60,000. There are some constituencies where most households fall below this and others where the majority of households are at the top of the income range.
  • Employment – Comparing the figures for employed and unemployed gives an indication of the economic health of a constituency. The other category includes those who are students, retired, caring for the home, and unable to work.
  • Change in population and household counts between 2016 and 2022 indicates where a constituency is experiencing more or less than the average growth of 8%. We also report the number of Eircodes added since the previous general election in 2020 as a further growth indicator.
  • Building Energy Ratings show the energy-efficiency of homes in a constituency. Poorly-rated homes cost more to heat and have a bigger environmental impact.
  • Some constituencies are well-supplied with public transport while others have a low density of bus stops.
  • In every constituency, the number of children aged 0-4 exceeds the number of creche spaces, but the gap is wider in some constituencies and narrower in others.
  • The split between renters and owner-occupiers, and in the latter group the split between those who are and aren’t paying a mortgage, gives insight into the importance of housing as a voter issue.
